Father's Day Tradition
The relationship a father shares with his children is unique. From protector, provider and playmate, a father fulfills many roles from the time a child is born.
History of Father’s Day
The history of Father’s Day is very interesting.
The thought for creating a day for children to honour their fathers began in Spokane, Washington in 1909, when Sonora Smart was listening to a Mother’s Day sermon. She and her siblings had been raised by her father, William Jackson Smart after the death of their mother.
Sonora wanted to tell her father how special he was. Sonora’s father’s birthday was in June, so she chose to hold the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.
National Recognition for new Tradition
The National Father’s Day Committee was formed in New York City in 1926. A Joint Resolution of Congress recognized the Father’s day in 1956 and in 1966 President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day to be held on the third Sunday of June.
Thus, the Father’s Day was born in memory and appreciation by a daughter who believed that her father and all other fathers should be honored with a special day.
Modern Times
Father’s Day is a secular festival that is celebrated in different parts of the world. In Ireland and the UK, this day falls on the third Sunday of every June. Therefore, the occasion is not marked on a particular date, rather keeps on changing each year.
People honor their fathers on this special day.
On this day, children show their feelings of affection and gratitude towards their dads, with the help of various tokens of love. Popular gifts like cards, flowers, and chocolates are presented to daddies.
Colorful handmade greeting cards are a preferred gift among many children. Father’s Day parties and cultural shows are also organized in many schools all across Britain.
Adults show their appreciation of their own fathers by spending time with them, eating a meal, or giving a gift that their Dad will enjoy. Often this is to do with an interest he has or it may be a book, or something practical that he will use.
